Order of Sharps and Flats

Wednesday, November 20, 2019 | Uncategorized

If you cannot remember the order that sharps and flats are added to key signatures, this useful mnemonic can be very helpful.

Sharps - Father Christmas Gave Dad An Electric Blanket.

Flats - Blanket Exploded And Dad Got Cold Feet.

For example, G major is the first major key with a sharp, and that sharp is an F sharp. The next key with 2 sharps is D major, and that has F sharp and C sharp.

It is also quite fascinating that the mnemonic for the flats is the exact reverse of that for the sharps.
